Duane Eddy, who broke new ground in pop music in the 1950s with a reverberant, staccato style of guitar playing that became known as twang, died on Tuesday in Franklin, Tenn. The cause of his death, in a hospital, was complications of cancer, said his wife, Deed (Abbate) Eddy. Mr. Eddy had tremendous success as a strictly instrumental recording artist in the late 1950s and ’60s, selling millions of records worldwide with growling, echo-laden hits like “Rebel Rouser” and “Forty Miles of Bad Road.” In the process, he played a major role in establishing electric guitar as the predominant musical instrument in rock ’n’ roll. Mr. Eddy influenced a multitude of rock guitarists, including George Harrison, Jimi Hendrix and Bruce Springsteen, whose plunging guitar lines on “Born to Run” pay homage to Mr. Eddy’s muscular fretwork.

But this week, investigators finally revealed her identity: Patricia Kathleen McGlone, a 16-year-old who lived in Brooklyn. NYPDInvestigators believe Patricia was killed in late 1969 or early 1970 and buried in the basement of the building. With advanced forensics, they determined her parents’ identity and where they lived in Brooklyn, and scoured through local public documents. Decades earlier, around the time Patricia was believed to have been killed, the building housed a nightclub called The Scene, Glas said. The New York City Medical Examiner’s Office determined in 2003 that the skeleton belonged to a teenage girl who stood 5-foot-2.

CNN —This spring marks both the 50th anniversary of Duke Ellington’s death, and what would have been his 125th birthday. I use their particular ways of expressing themselves and it all becomes part of my own style.”To know Duke Ellington is to know his band — although few can name its other members today. Composer and bandleader Duke Ellington hovers over fellow pianist and band member Billy Strayhorn in this 1948 photograph. “Ellington plays the piano, but his real instrument is the band,” Strayhorn said. If it involved music, Ellington gave it a shot, always with his band in tow.

The bright side of divorce, according to experts
  + stars: | 2024-03-19 | by ( Madeline Holcombe | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Divorce rates have been steadily trending downward in the United States, according to recent data, but marriages ending are still a common, disruptive experience. Most people probably don’t head into marriage anticipating divorce — but for those who find themselves in one, there are ways to encourage compassion for one another and ultimately build something stronger, experts said. Grieving the lossA divorce can be amicable yet still marked by loss and grief, said Rebecca Hendrix, a marriage and family therapist in New York. Support can come from a therapist, a religious leader, friends, a divorce support group, or even books and media that make you feel less alone, she added. Divorce may motivate some reflection on ways you want to make changes or even launch the first call you ever make to a therapist, Hendrix said.

The sun sets on the U.S. Supreme Court building after a stormy day in Washington, U.S., November 11, 2022. Idaho's Republican attorney general and top Republican state lawmakers in court papers told the Supreme Court that Winmill's ruling has permitted "an ongoing violation of both Idaho's sovereignty and its traditional police power over medical practice." Winmill that month agreed, blocking the Idaho law from being enforced in cases of abortions needed to avoid putting the woman's health in "serious jeopardy" or risking "serious impairment to bodily functions." Circuit Court of Appeals in September agreed to let Idaho enforce its ban amid an appeal. But the full 9th Circuit this month reversed the panel's ruling, granting the Biden administration's request to block the Idaho law while the appeal proceeds.

Circuit Court of Appeals last month allowed the state to enforce its ban, reversing a lower court order that had partially blocked it. Wade, the landmark decision that had established a right to abortion nationwide. So if people are less likely to be hospitalized or die from a Covid-19 infection now, has the danger passed? Through genetic bad luck, some people may just be at higher risk of serious reactions to Covid-19 infections, and they probably wouldn’t know it. Researchers defined it as any new or continuing symptoms more than 90 days after a Covid-19 infection. Based on his experience treating long Covid patients, Griffin said that the percentage reported in the Australian paper seems high. Uncanny disquiet governs the stories in this collection. In “Heads,” Jimi Hendrix, who has appeared elsewhere in Allen’s fiction, spends late nights with the painter Francis Bacon, the two talking about art-making and life while Jimi occasionally strums his guitar. In the collection’s title story, Allen sends the boxer Jack Johnson to Australia for a high-profile fight, where his celebrity and Blackness lead to singular experiences at racialized extremes of local life. On description alone, you might think this is merely weird and wise comedy, but I think Allen has more in common with Donald Glover than George Saunders. These are difficult, inventive stories that, at their best, occupy a range of frequencies and otherworldly places with — to borrow Allen’s brilliant three-word description of Jimi Hendrix’s way with music — a “fierce itching dazzle.”

A tiny New York City studio with no bathroom and $2,350-a-month rent was quickly snapped up. "If you want to be on a prime block," a student who bid on it said, "you can't have everything." Homes like these, however, are actually relatively common in New York City. "This apartment has allowed me to live in the center of NYC, which was a priority for me.

On weekends in springtime, when the warmer weather has yet to click into place, relaxing can be hard. The playlist, a collaborative effort by readers of The Morning, is a big sprawling thing. We weren’t able to include every song submitted, but at over 24 hours, the playlist is more than long enough to provide a soundtrack for your entire spring. Put it on while you’re making breakfast, while you’re running errands, while you’re on a long drive. How long had it been since I found myself with a totally unscheduled hour in a strange place?
